Vitex – Fertility Herbs
Chinese vitex agnus-castus
In China, Chinese vitex agnus-castus is also traditionally used as a medicinal herb, which mainly grows in subtropical regions of China. According to records from “Compendium of Materia Medica” by Li Shi Zhen, Chinese chaste berry was widely used in treatments of dampness-phlegm, asthma, deafness, cancer and vaginal discharge in women and other symptoms.
Chinese people even used native vitex agnus-castus as supplements to diet on daily basis. They collected and stored chaste berry during harvest season. Not only chaste berry was used as herbal tea to quench thirst during busy farming seasons, also it was used to relieve symptoms such as headache and sneezing when catching a cold. Especially during months after birth, in some regions women must take a bath with boiled water of vitex leaf or vitex berry to prevent post-natal headache caused by pathogenic wind attacks.
If one woman had dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation and other women’s diseases, even infertility problem, some experienced herbalists would give priority to consumption of vitex agnus-castus tea in order to relieving symptoms and bringing them back to health. From this perspective, it now appears that the way Chinese ancient herbalists used vitex chaste berry as fertility herb coincides with their western counterparts.

In addition to confirm the chasteberry fertility theory handed down from ancient herbalists, they also found that chaste berry has more significant potentials on natural health care, which is waiting a further exploitation in the future. For example,
