Bondi: Sunny Days!

Image
At the moment the weather has gone cold and a bit rainy! Last Friday was a super hot day. Here's a reminder, to keep you inspired, of that sunny day.

Bondi Beach: Festival of the Winds

Image
The Festival of the winds is a kite festival down at Bondi each year. My favourites were the whale kites. Held up high by a box kite above them they looked very majestic and even realistic swimming in the sky. Also this was a favourite one. The high up kite on a single string. This reminded me of when I was in Beijing almost at the same time as this last year. Wherever you were in the city you could look up and above the massive unit blocks you would see at least one kite, high, high up.

Chinese Herb Breakthrough Wins Prestigious Award

The award known as American Nobel Prize was presented last Saturday to an 81 year old researcher for her work on a hinese herb called Artemisia. Tu Youyou is a Chinese citizen and the first person Chinese citizen to receive the prestigious Lasker Medical Research Award. Her work, along with her research team has studied the Chinese herb Artemisia which is used to cure malaria. Today the artemisia based drug created by Tu and her colleagues is now a standard treatment for malaria and statistics show it's success rate is 97 percent. "I think the honor not only belongs to me, but also to all Chinese scientists," Tu said at the award ceremony held in New York. "The discovery of artemisinin is a gift to mankind from traditional Chinese medicine," Tu was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "Not often in the history of clinical medicine can we celebrate a discovery that has eased the pain and distress of hundreds of millions of people and saved the lives of countless numb...

Note: Im quietly working on a resource Id like to give away for free, in advanceof the launch of the upcoming herbs course. It will be a helpful framework for you to build (and/or strengthen) your lifelong relationship with herbs. However, I dont want to make this, nor go through the effort of building the upcoming course, if nobody is interested in getting any of it. So, I need your help again to gauge interest details at the end of this article. A brief history of my life with Chinese herbalism I dont know if there has ever been a more excited new student of Chinese medicine. I was so excited about my new school, I went to two student for a day information sessions. I was so excited, I called my professors ahead of time to chat. So excited that I read my syllabi and all uploaded class notes multiple times, weeks before classes began. Once I knew this was what I was meant to do, I just couldnt imagine doing anything else. The first year of classes was great Im a philosopher by trai...

Learning Chinese herbs can be hard but it doesnt have to be

Ive been teaching herbs at my alma mater , and every term is a HUGE learning experience for me. I also do private tutoring, and even did so when I was still a student. Before Chinese medicine, I did teaching at the undergraduate level and still more tutoring in all kinds of subjects. As Ive gone along, Ive noticed some things about how people learn and what type of teaching really STICKS. Ive learned a lot, especially, in teaching Chinese herbs Theres just so much frustration out there, and so much misguided (if well intentioned) teaching. But, herbs are such a powerful resource for us as practitioners I hate to see people struggle so much. Thats why I teach to help ease the burden a bit. I just feel so enormously blessed to be able to share what Ive learned even more blessed that I learned it in the first place. I mean, the number of incredible practitioners (peers and teachers included) in a 50 mile radius from my clinic is truly astounding! But not everybody lives in Portland The...

HRT Causes Nutrient Loss Learn The Supplements to Add To Your Diet

I am blessed with an outstanding community in Los Angeles of Alternative Medicine and Natural Medicine doctors. One great pioneer in the field is Dr. Hyla Cass. We meet once a month, along with other movers and shakers in the Alternative Medicine Community to learn from each other, network and enjoy a wonderful meal. I wanted to re-post some excerpts from one of Dr. Cass's recent articles. This information is so critical and yet left unsaid by most doctors that prescribe the drugs. If you or someone you know is taking Hormone Replacement Therapy, please read Dr. Cass's vitamin supplement suggestions. I'm not sure why they won't just call a spade a spade, HRT is Artificial Estrogen Replacement. HRT or Hormone Replacement Therapy does sound much more benign and certainly less scary. If you suffer from menopause hot flashes and night sweats we understand you may be suffering for years and dealing with the menopause symptoms can make life unbearable. There are other options...

Welcome (or welcome back!) For long time readers, especially those of you that read by email subscription or RSS, I implore you come check out the site! Its been entirely redesigned, and I would really love to hear your thoughts about the changes. For those of you who are new, youve come on board at an exciting time. Why redesign? For the last year, I have labored on this site. The low rate of content production might make you think that was not true. Indeed, Ive not been putting out posts at the high clip of my earliest days, or even at the medium clip of the middle days. This was not for a lack of something to share, nor a lack of caring. It was equal parts rising to the reality of clinical practice, business owning & raising a teenager peppered with a healthy dose of relaxation, getting married & reconfiguring my life outside of the rigor and schedule of institutionalized education. A lot to manage. So, if I wasnt writing, how was I laboring? Chiefly, I was coming to unders...
