Alternative Medicine Cures Not Band Aids

Alternative medicine has come a long way since Patch Adams, MD. first challenged the medical status quo. You may remember Robin Williams played Patch in the movie called "Patch Adams". Today, more than 30 years later, he is not the only one to pose the question, "What is a cure and what is a band aid?" Acupuncture, Chinese herbs, Chiropractic, Homeopathy, Massage therapy and other alternative medicine therapies are not yet fully covered by most insurance carriers in the U.S. but times are changing. These "Alternative Medicine" therapies are being used everyday by more and more Americans who are finding Acupuncture and Chinese herbs and other therapies are not just band aids. Around the world, more advanced societies see the value of traditional Chinese herbs and other healing modalities and depend on herbal remedies rather than artificial drugs. Sometimes we need a band aid but more often, we what we really need is a cure.

Chinese Herbs For Brain Cancer

Image
Could it really be possible the compound known as indirubin, one of the active ingredients in traditional Chinese herbs could block the growth of glioblastoma brain tumors? U.S. researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, says YES, the Chinese herbs have proven this in mice, and now research will proceed with humans. The Chinese herb formula known as Dang Gui Long Hui Wan consists of 10 herbs which was originally published in a Chinese text named the Dan Xi Xin Fa (Dan Xi's Heart Approach) in 1347 CE. The same Chinese herbal medicine formula has been used for treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).1 The findings on indirubin and this novel therapeutic strategy for brain tumors was recently published in the Journal Cancer Research. Although research on indirubins has been ongoing for years this is the first time indirubin drugs have improved survival in glioblastoma and thes...

LI 5: Powerful

Image
The large intestine channel is diverse and interesting and can help with ghosts! I was just revising some point location and I found the following about Large Intestine 5: Dispels Wind Heat Indicated for headaches, redness, pain and swelling of the eye, toothache, sore throat and pain of the wrist. Also it's a point used to aide in quitting smoking. But used with BL61 and LI7 it's great if you're seeing ghosts...

Getting back to the basics : critical importance of understanding FIRE

Image
Ive been asked to work on a course that would cover the foundational concepts of a deep, engaged Chinese medicine understanding. Im not talking about the same tired diagrams of the five elements and their interactions, Im not talking about simplistic review of the fact that everything is yin and yang, Im talking about the things that feed into the roots, that feed the branches, and let the leaves flourish. Im talking about the 5 evils and 19 lines of pathology in the Neijing Suwen (aff link),Im talking about the basics of the Chinese calendar and the flow of energy through the seasons, Im talking about the interactions of the channel system, the 6 conformations, the five elements and the other systems of looking at the body in Chinese medicine. Im talking about creating a course that would take people from zero to sixty in a few weeks Its daunting, for sure, but I think Im up for it. While Im creating the course, Im going to share with you little tidbits Ive picked up. Im not 100% sure...

Learn how a deeper understanding of spirit can transform your clinical practice : CMQ 2 released!

Image
Its here! Most of what you want to know is on the Chinese Medicine Quarterly Issue 2 page. Go on over, buy the issue, and then come back Ill wait. Done? Well, before you jump offline and start reading your new issue, Ive got a few things Id like to share. First, this issue was much easier to create than the last. We had our processes mostly down, our division of labor was clarified, and we all really enjoyed the clarity (and hugeness) of our topic. I could talk about Spirit all. day. long. It doesnt hurt that its linguistically, historically, theoretically, personally AND clinically interesting. Second, we are so appreciative that you chose to join us in our adventure to deepen into our medicine. If we come together as a group, as a profession, as people who love the complexity and healing this medicine brings we can do great things. Buying a little digital magazine, for less than a couple of chai lattes, may not seem like its doing much, but it is doing more than you know. Every is...

Magnolia Healing Centre: Acupuncture Clinic

Image
I thought it would be nice to show you around Magnolia House healing centre in Rose Bay, NSW. It's a church building, as you can see from the pictures, and the congregation has moved on. The space is now a dynamic healing centre and includes music, art therapy, counseling and also where I come in: acupuncture. Working inside a church is really is a great privilege and I love it! There is such a sense of calm respect in there. It really is a very beautiful experience. Furthermore I am doing community treatments here and the feeling behind doing that is different. It's so much more relaxed than acupuncture as a business. I am surrounded by great people and patients know that you are doing them a favour with reduced cost treatments and the effort you put in. I found it very humbling and just feels good! Soon the main hall will develop into a communal community acupuncture space. I can imagine patients getting an acupuncture treatment while they chat to each other, someone plays th...

In between patients

It's been cold here in Sydney! When I say cold it means having to wear a jumper instead of just of t-shirt..! But it is officially winter and here I am with a large latte in a great bookshop called Gertrude and Alice, on Hall Street in Bondi. Basically it's a bookshop, but I think they sell more lattes to be honest with you! Great place to study, especially if you can get the couch. I found a copy of the Barefoot Doctors Manual too. This book looks great but I find is not as helpful as it looks! What do you think of it?
